USMNT

MLS Quota

After the January roster was announced 17 of the 24 MLS clubs were represented. I assumed this was pretty much normal and nothing fishy at this point was happening (I was wrong, just wait). Within the next 10 months Minnesota, Atlanta & New England would be added to the list of MLS clubs with players called up to the national team.

At this point, only four four clubs have not had a player called up in 2019. All only in the last 10 months since Gregg Berhalter was installed as coach.

  1. Houston (Which as of August has Christian Ramirez who was formerly called up)
  2. Sporting KC (which might have the most former USMNT players on it; Zusi, Besler, Opara, Rowe & also the location of a major US training center)
  3. Vancouver (which… isn’t American… enough said)
  4. Orlando (… which has no excuse).

Is USMNT and USSF making call ups to gain viewership and support from MLS fan bases?

With only four teams (and only one completely unrepresented) will we see that team have a player called up in the near future? January camp is coming soon. Will it be Chris Mueller… or maybe a blast from the past (especially from our ineptitude at the striker position) and see Dom Dwyer called up? Or will Berhalter continue to be himself and call up someone that is not on anyone’s radar (just like Aaronson, Gasper or Turner)?

In that case it could be Benji Michel or Kyle Smith or even Dannilo Acosta. Whoever it is… Orlando will be the next team to get USMNT players called up from. Orlando has already had two USMNT games in 2019 (March 21 vs Ecuador and the upcoming November 15th game vs Canada). The federation (USSF) is doing their best effort to gain fan bases and viewership in EVERY MLS market.
