Youngins can Play

We’re about 20 months from the next World Cup and the next round of qualifying starts in two weeks. The window for breaking into the squad is slowly closing, but many are making noise to be those late entries that Julian Green and a few other wild cards were for us in 2014.

Julian Green

Speaking of Green, he is still in the fight to make our qualifying squad and helped his case a lot by putting away his first competitive goal for Bayern Munich against Augsburg DFB-Pokal (Bundesliga). Can you believe we have a Striker that plays for Bayern Munich who is still fighting for a place on USMNT? Quite a change from the 2014 Cup where when Jozy Altidore pulled up injured we thought all was lost.

Andrew Wooten

Another guy, Andrew Wooten, is making some moves in the 2 Bundesliga where Bobby Wood came from. Andrew has made an appearance for us in a friendly against Costa Rica in 2015 and also represented the US on the U23 team. Wooten’s has a German mother and American serviceman father and was born and raised in Germany. He signed a three year contract with SV Sandhausen in 2014 and has played well for the team. He’s got 4 goals already this season in 10 matches. Bobby Wood came from 2 Bundesliga and Wooten could follow a similar path, though he’s already 27 years old.

Fabian Johnson

Fabian scored again for Borussia Mönchengladbach vs VfB Stuttgart. Johnson continues to be the best American player we’ve got. He added an assist as well in the 2-0 win. He’s consistent and a mainstay for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bobby Wood

Bobby Wood has gotten back to his goal scoring ways, netting a brace against Hallescher for his side Hamburg in the the German Cup.

Goal 1

Goal 2

Jordan Morris

Morris led his team to the playoffs with an assist in their final game and then went the distance as they won 1-0 last night to get to the next round. He’s likely leading as rookie of the year candidate for MLS.

The Rest

John Brooks, Cameron Carter-Vickers and  DeAndre Yedlin  played full games for their respective sides in the German and English Cups. While Timmy Chandler (German) and Gedion Zelalem (English) came off the bench for their sides in victories. Pulisic continued to be Pulisic and there are several young players like on MLS playoff teams that will gain from their experience:

Steve Birnbaum and Bill Hamid of DC United had a tough loss to Montreal and are out of the playoffs.

Kellyn Acosta’s FC Dallas had a bye which will hopefully give him more time to recover from his injury.

Jozy and Bradley, not really consider youngsters any more but were able to also get a W and move on to the next round.
