Bryang William Kayo grew up in Gaithersburg MD and fell in love with soccer around the age of 7 following his fathers passion for the sport. Following youth rec soccer he joined Bethesda Soccer Club for their U10 team and was coached by US international Phillip Gyau, father of Joseph Gyau currently of FC Cincinnati. It was this time where Kayo focused on soccer and gave up track and cross country. Gyau was a important influential coach for Kayo early in his career.
Kayo decided to join the DC United Academy in 2017 and started playing at the U16/17 level. Even though it was a more difficult commute, taking the metro, he felt it was in his best interest in order to get better exposure. For the 17/18 season, Kayo played 13 matches logging 880 minutes. For the 18/19 season, Kayo moved up to the U18/19 level and later was loaned out to USL Loudoun United FC. Kayo earned DA Academy 2019 East Conference Best XI honors.
On September 9, 2019, Kayo signed with USL Orange County SC as a MLS Homegrown contract was never agreed upon with DC United. Wolfsburg was already very interested in having Kayo join them in Germany but he needed to turn 18 first. Kayo never made an appearance with Orange County SC as he eventually joined Wolfsburg signing a contract on July 13, 2020.
Kayo’s USYNYT career started at the U14 level in 2014. He later was part of the U17 cycle that qualified and participated 2019 U17 world cup. Prior to those tournaments, Kayo participated in the May 2019 Gold Cup pre-camp for Gregg Berhalter in Annapolis MD. Kayo was also invited to the 2020 USMNT January camp.
When Kayo moved to Germany he started training with the Wolfsburg U19’s. After making a positive showing and there being a lack of CM depth for the U23’s, he was moved directly to Wolfsburg II. Kayo’s Wolfsburg II debut came on September 13, 2020. Kayo went on to start 8 out of the 9 match season and log 612 minutes.
Kayo is provisionally cap tied to USA based on participation in several youth tournament matches. He has Cameroon heritage but has never been contacted by them. Kayo has ambitions to one day play in England and speaks French.
On behalf of the entire USMNT fan base, we wish Bryang a successful 2021/22 campaign with Wolfsburg as he makes strides to break in to the US senior team!
